|
Astragalus membranaceus, or Huang Qi, is an herb that has been used for centuries in chinese Medicine as a strengthening tonic. Astragalus is also an Alternative Medicine favorite, worldwide, to strengthen the immune system. Astragalus is used in modern herbology, as well, as an invigourating herbal remedy. Astragalus, is becoming a very popular home remedy for weakness, or immune weakness. Numerous scientific studies have now confirmed the legendary strengthening power of Astragalus.
Immunological research is proving it to be a powerful immune system stimulant. Astragalus contains a polysaccharides, which have been shown to intensify phagocytosis of reticulo-endothelial systems, stimulate pituitary-adrenal cortical activity and restore depleted red blood cell formation in bone marrow. Astragalus is known to stimulate production of interferon. This certainly explains why Astragalus is extremely effective as an herb to take after serious illness, or infection, to restore strength and immunity. It's an ideal herb, following, mono, Chronic fatigue, Surgery, etc. Astragalu would be important to take during cancer treatments, or even for people whoi constantly suffer from colds, or Strep infections. Recently, medical scientists have begun to study the immunity enhancing properties of Astragalus in experiments of AIDS treatment. Astragalus is considered one of the most promising herbs. I have used Astragalus (also called Milk Vetch), for many years with big success in the treatment of Hypo-Thyroid. Sluggish Thyroid symptoms can be slow metabolism, weight gain, exhaustion, feeling cold, and more. If TSH levels(Thyroid Stimulating Hormone) rise, it indicates that the thyroid is slowing down. Rather than go on medication for life, Astragalus can get the thyroid function normalized after a month or two of taking 1 teaspoon of the tincture three times a day. Then retest TSH levels to see the difference. Of course, consult your medical practitioner, or TCM herbalist for personal management of your case. Astragalus is available in many forms. Chinese herbalists sell the dry roots, which look like tongue depressors. Other stores sell powder of the roots, extracts, it can be an ingredient in a medicinal formula herbal tea. Astragalus leaves and flowers are used, but much less than the root. Preparations and Dosage : Decoction: put l teaspoonful of the root into a cup of water, bring to boil and simmer for l0-l5 minutes. This should be drunk three times a day. Herbal Tincture("Drops"): take 1/2-1 teaspoon of the tincture three times a day. |
